There is a lot of different opinion on the best type of artificial bait to use, in my opinion the best to use is whatever they are eating naturally be it corn,barley basically any animal feed there is around any new bait introduced should be used over several weeks to be really effective as rats are neophobic that is they are wary of anything new.
If artificial baits are to be used it seems everyone will have their own favourites, we have found after many trial and error sessions that the following works for us.
1) Yoghurt
2) Crushed Biscuit
3) Canned Cat food put through a kitchen blender
4) Peanut Butter
These baits tend to slow them down (sometimes) just enough to get a shot off.
